The corporate media says the surge is working. do you agree?

None of what you cite references the surge. Citing several instances of violence means nothing: the surge was meant to reduce violence, with the goal of ending it completely. If it has reduced violence, then it is working, plain and simple. I don't know how else you could rate the effectiveness of it.
